The Department of Art, Art History, and Visual Studies is dedicated to the practice and study of past and present visual art. Combining the Art and Art History programs, we facilitate the development of students' visual literacy, rhetorical analysis, and critical thinking through each of the majors and minors in (studio) Art, Art History, and Film Studies.

We work to empower our students to see, think, and communicate as conscientious global citizens. Combined with Sewanee's deeply cross-linked liberal arts curriculum, these objectives result in a diverse skill set that is ideal for entering the workforce or allowing students to continue on their academic journeys to graduate school. Our studio Art and Art History graduates have gone on to pursue graduate degrees, own galleries, work in the corporate and tech arenas, direct art collections, establish successful careers as fine artists and designers, and much more.
Extensive affiliations with study away programs, and placements in summer internships and research partnerships, supported by a department fund, provide invaluable experiential learning experiences and promote career readiness.
We are proud to announce the Peter V. Guarisco Merit Scholarship in Art and Art History, which is awarded annually to one junior Art major and one junior Art History major. The scholarship finances senior year tuition as well as a career-preparedness experience of the student’s own devising following graduation.
