Visiting Instructor of Violin
BA Grand Valley State University, MM Ohio University
A native of West Michigan, Andrew Uhe grew up in a musical family beginning Suzuki violin studies at the age of three. Mr. Uhe pursues a wide range of musical interests including regular engagements with regional orchestras, chamber groups, and solo recitals. Performances have taken him across the U.S. He has also traveled outside the U.S. giving a solo recital tour in Argentina and several chamber concerts in the Czech Republic.
Andrew has a strong interest in avant-garde music from the late 20th Century especially solo and chamber works by Berio, Scelsi, Maderna, and others. While living in Iowa City, he worked actively with the University of Iowa’s Center for New Music and in direct collaboration with many emerging and award-winning composers including Laura Schwendinger, Carson Cooman, and Burton Beerman.
Apart from new music, Andrew also enjoys projects that allow him to explore new styles and media. He has a long history performing Early Music on period instruments and has taken lessons with many prominent Baroque violinists including Stanley Ritchie, Cynthia Roberts, and Marilyn McDonald. The diverse environment found in Atlanta, his current city of residence, has allowed him to work in the film industry, perform in the popular Candlelight Concerts, and explore various non-classical genres including Hip Hop, R&B, Bollywood, Jazz, Bluegrass, and Old-time music. His work with Atlanta Fusion has facilitated collaborative performances with the Gerald Freeman Jazz Ensemble and the Atlanta-based dance collective Ballethnic.
Mr. Uhe’s experience as a teacher began early. As the second of nine home-schooled children, he often found himself in the role of honorary teacher and chamber coach for his younger siblings. Many of his early private students have gone on to study at the university level and continue to perform as adults. He has held teaching appointments at Ohio University, the University of Iowa, Laredo Community College, and the Lawrenceville-Suwanee School of Music. He is excited to join the music faculty at University of the South as a Visiting Instructor of Violin.
Mr. Uhe holds degrees from Grand Valley State University (BA) and Ohio University (MM) and is currently completing his dissertation from the University of Iowa (DMA). His primary teachers were Eric Tanner, Ariana Bronne, Marjorie Bagley, and Katie Wolfe. He also coaches regularly with members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Jay Christy and Jun-Ching Lin.
