Environmental Arts and Humanities at Sewanee

What is “nature” and how should humans live in relation to the non-human? Can artists, filmmakers, musicians, philosophers, and writers help us imagine a more just and livable world? How do the arts and humanities deepen our understanding of our complex, evolving relationships to the planet we inhabit? In the Environmental Arts and Humanities Program, we bring together disciplines from across the liberal arts curriculum to help us understand and respond to today’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Psychology at Sewanee

What factors shape the way we develop, think, and act? What defines our relationships with ourselves and with others? Psychology uses scientific approaches to investigate & understand the human condition. Our faculty equip students with a rigorous foundational understanding of psychological principles and methods that inform our scientific understanding of the human condition. Our Psychology Department offers students the opportunity to conduct leading edge research alongside faculty dedicated to nurturing students’ intellectual and personal growth. Our majors develop knowledge, skills, and ways of thinking essential to a wide range of possible professional pursuits, a rewarding and fulfilling personal life, and a more just and equitable world.

Sewanee Symphony Orchestra

The Sewanee Symphony Orchestra (SSO) was founded in 1987 to assemble a symphony orchestra within a liberal arts community. The SSO has grown to the point where, today, it is able to present a full range of the symphonic repertory and include a wide variety of musical styles and genres. As a key component of the liberal arts environment, the orchestra not only collaborates with other music ensembles but also often participates in campus-wide interdisciplinary projects.

Sewanee provides funding for an approved summer internship or research fellowship, a semester-long study abroad opportunity at no additional tuition cost, and the ability to graduate with one major in four years. Of course, you will have to do your part. If you meet Sewanee’s academic and social expectations, these opportunities will be provided.
