Who are we?

The SYWC only runs for two weeks, but we work throughout the academic year to prepare the best summer possible for our participants. When you contact us, you'll be in touch with Dr. Heidi Siegrist (director).

You may also be assisted by one of our amazing work study students, who are vital to ensuring that this conference runs smoothly. You can meet some of them here:

Grace Truett, born and raised in Knoxville, TN, is a senior at the University of the South majoring in English and minoring in gender studies. She has worked as an aid for the SYWC for nearly three years now, and also worked as a dorm counselor during the 2022 session. Grace loves the SYWC for its ability to immerse students in a constructive community and help them recognize their strengths. On campus, she serves as a co-director of the Queer and Ally House, secretary of local sorority Alpha Delta Theta, and vice president of English honor society Sigma Tau Delta. Her free time is spent volunteering as an ESL teaching assistant, biking around campus, and, naturally, reading. A fun fact about her is that she shares her birthday with Shirley Jackson!

Hello! My name is Carly Grace. I'm a junior at Sewanee but I started working for the during my freshman year. I attended the conference last summer as a counselor and met many amazing young writers. I'm an English and Creative Writing double major with a minor in Psychology and I hope to be an investigative journalist who writes novels on the side. Along with the SYWC, I also work at Sewanee's Cup & Gown cafe in the DuPont Library. My extracurricular activities include being a Posse scholar, the Vice President of my sorority, Co-Captain of Sewanee's Too Turnt Tigers dance team, and the Secretary for Sewanee's NAACP chapter.

My name is Mackenzie Maxwell, and this is my first year working for the Sewanee Young Writers' Conference. I am a first-year at Sewanee, and I plan on majoring in Environmental Arts and Humanities. In my spare time, I love to spend time outside, hike, read a book, or participate in a yoga class.
