After Sewanee, Nicholas went to divinity school at Yale and received a Ph.D in history from Vanderbilt. Formed by the Sewanee department's traditional strength in British history, he has expanded his interest and research into the early modern Atlantic world. Though still writing and teaching history, his primary vocation is as a priest of the Episcopal Church in South Carolina.
