Her interests lead to a TONYA internship with the National Trust of Historic Preservation. Lizzie was also active in the Sewanee outreach program, which inspired her to join the Peace Corps. She spent two years teaching English in the Republic of Moldova – once part of the Soviet Union. Still interested by questions of historical interpretation, Lizzie returned to Moldova in 2003 and 2004 to conduct research for her dissertation about the re-writing of history after communism and the challenges of teaching this new history in school. She earned her Ph.D. in International Education from NYU in 2006 and joined the American University faculty in 2007. Lizzie teaches undergraduate and graduate classes, and encourages all of her students to participate in community service and/or join the Peace Corps. She has returned to Moldova recently for more research and is currently writing a book on social memory and history teaching.
