Student Resources and Support

Sewanee students commit themselves to living with honor, which the Honor Code recognizes as “an ideal and an obligation . . . [that] exists in the human spirit and it lives in the relations between human beings.” As a liberal arts institution, one of our main objectives is to instill in our students the abilities to problem solve and to think critically while upholding high standards of honor, trust, and ethical responsibility. The use of AI should never circumvent or undermine the conditions that make for an excellent liberal arts education: an education that engages both with the enduring questions of humanity and the needs of our current society through honor, stewardship, and citizenship.

Students entering in Advent 2018 or later can take advantage of the Sewanee Pledge, with its opportunity to participate in study away, or to engage in a research fellowship, or to have a paid internship.

Our academic curriculum—the required 128 credit hours—promotes common learning outcomes (our general education curriculum) and in-depth intellectual engagement (the major), with opportunities for focused preparation in various disciplines. Electives offer exploration and further discovery.

Sewanee is committed to providing resources to help students grow and develop. Academic advising supports students' intellectual development, confidence, and self-efficacy. Career Readiness helps students understand more of who they are becoming and ways to explore pathways in life. Student Life promotes involvement and connections. Students are thus supported in their holistic growth as they discern their purpose and vocation.

Sewanee is committed to supporting students' needs for accommodations (academic and otherwise) through the Office of Student Accessibility Services. As well, resources like funding, free supplies, and more are provided by many departments across campus.

Students have additional opportunities for research and study beyond the campus through numerous Scholarships, fellowships, and internship programs.

Sewanee celebrates successful students through a variety of ways, many of which include the University’s honor and recognition societies.

The goal isn’t to “step outside of your comfort zone”—it’s to expand that zone. Students can pursue various opportunities, both near and far, that will open new perspectives and push boundaries.

The six-week summer session at Sewanee offers an opportunity for College students to take one or two courses (up to eight credit hours) and thereby facilitate progress toward earning their degree.

A syllabus is the professor’s outline of topics, readings, and assignments covered during a course. Students and alumni may need a syllabus when seeking admission to graduate or professional schools or transferring to another institution.
