All students at Sewanee will study a foreign language (or several!). As such, you are asked to indicate your preference for language on your Course Selection Form. The typical sequence is Language 103-104-203, followed either by an additional 200- or a 300-level course in the language, or by a cultural studies course. If you have experience with a language in high school, and completed the appropriate language placement test, you may be placed in an advanced section; if not, you will start at the beginning, 103. If you're placed at the highest level, 300+, you may have some choice of courses (see below), and you should know that you will have to take that 300-level course (rather than a cultural studies course) to meet the requirement. We certainly want you to begin the sequence right away!

LANGUAGES TAUGHT AT SEWANEE

Below are links to 300-level language courses for those placed at that level. If you placed at 300+, you will be able to indicate your course(s) of interest on the Course Selection Form. The course description will also have information about any pre-requisites.

Finally, several of the 300-level courses are actually taught in English and are open to all. They are marked as "no pre-req" (no pre-requisites or placement required).

Here's a video that reviews the requirement of "Comprehending Cross-Culturally: Language and Global Studies."
