At the bottom of this page, you will find courses offered in the upcoming term that are both appropriate for and available to incoming first-year students. These courses do not have prerequisites (that is, there are no Sewanee courses that you must complete before taking these courses), though some require placement based on several factors. A few things to note:
- Sewanee will hold any potential "pre-Sewanee" credits from AP or IB testing until you arrive on campus and meet with your advisor: see this explanation. However, we can use the documented scores to place you in a higher level course. Courses marked with the "(AP/IB)" attribute may be taken by those first-year students who have earned either a 4 or 5 on the AP exam or a 5, 6, or 7 on the IB exam. You are encouraged to select these courses if you have taken the germane AP/IB exams (described on the Registrar’s page) and you have received an official score report.
- Courses marked with the “(*)” attribute are advanced courses that require special placement by the academic department or program.
- In the "Foreign Language" category you'll find a link to all our language programs. The courses listed, however, are for the benefit of those students who placed into the highest level of a foreign language at Sewanee and are given more than one advanced language course from which to choose. If you placed into a 100- or 200-level language course, do not include the course in your list of ten courses but indicate your choice in the Foreign Language Placement section.
- If you would like to take Calculus this fall, on your Course Preference Form, you will select "MATH 101/102/207 [by placement]." The faculty in Mathematics will place you in the appropriate level and course, whether MATH 101, MATH 102, or MATH 207, based on your high school records.
- If you would like to take Chemistry this fall, you will select "CHEM 121/151 [by placement]." The faculty in Chemistry will place you in the appropriate level and course, CHEM 121 or 151, based on your high school records.
Remember as you complete the Course Preference Form
- You need to list your courses in your order of preference; the registration process will prioritize the courses at the top of your list!
- Be intentional in your selections: any course you include could be on your final schedule.
- Do not duplicate courses on this list; the registration program will reject entries with duplicate courses. (You can list a course that's also on your Encounter list, as we will offer both “regular” and “Encounter” sections of BIOL 133, CSCI 157, ECON 120, SPAN 299, and WRIT 206.)
