A contemporary take on The Suppliant Women by Aeschylus, Charles Mee's Big Love is an epic and lyrical wave of a play that crashes upon the audience in a symphony of music, dancing, fighting, loving, and throwing yourself to the floor over and over and over.  Should be a fun wedding!

Things We Will Miss

THINGS WE WILL MISS is a demonstration of what we've been working on in the Devising Lab: Theatremaking for the 21st Century. The performance is a collage of collaboratively created scenes, moments, and monologues speaking to one of the most pressing issues of our time: the Climate Crisis. The work is created and performed by Nathaniel Klein, Emily K. Harrison, Emma Miller, Mary Emily Morris, and Kalia Thompson.

Dancewise: Spark!

The Department of Theatre & Dance presents Dancewise: Spark!, a dance production with choreography and performances by students, faculty, and guest artists, under the artistic direction of Courtney World at the Tennessee Williams Center's Proctor Hill Theatre in the fall semester of 2021.  Spark! features the choreography of guest artist Jean Appolon, artistic director of Jean Appolon Expressions, a Boston-based contemporary dance company deeply rooted in Haitian folkloric culture. 

Eurydice

Theatre Sewanee presents Eurydice, written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by Nathaniel Klein to be performed at the Tennessee Williams Center during the spring of 2021.

Much Ado About Nothing

William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing was performed in Angel Park (across from the Blue Chair) at on April 19, 20, & 21.  This performance was a 1690s-meets-1960s, Muppet-y take on this classic romantic comedy!  

Hamlet

In this classic Shakespeare tragedy, Prince Hamlet contemplates life, death, sanity, love, and revenge after the death of his father, the king of Denmark. This production directed by James Crawford ran October 22-October 31, 2021.  View the video montage compiled by Carmen Momplet.

Men on Boats

In the first unmasked/totally vaccinated theatre production since the start of the pandemic, an ensemble of twelve Sewanee students performed Men On Boats by Jaclyn Backhaus outdoors at Angel Park May 5-9.  The performances were well-attended, and well-received.  Men On Boats is the story of Major John Wesley Powell and the nine men who accompanied him on the first government-sanctioned expedition of the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1869. A unique aspect of the play is that Backhaus asks that the cast be made up entirely by people who are not cisgender white males. Why? Historically, they got to tell all the stories. Backhaus makes room for the rest of us. 

Dancewise: 2020

November 4-7, 2020.
DanceWise: Sensational is a dance concert produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance, with artistic direction by Associate Professor of Dance Courtney World. Student performances are featured in choreography by students, faculty, and guest choreographer Aaron Allen Jr., former visiting assistant professor of Dance.

Performance of Molière's "Scapin"

Theatre/Sewanee will present Moliere's farce, SCAPIN, Wednesday thru Saturday, October 14-17, at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday matinee, October 18, at 2 p.m.  Due to COVID restrictions, audience size will be limited to 35 and no one will be admitted without a reservation. In addition, all audience members should be masked.

An accountant fights off a home invasion with the help of his husband's spy agency.  A radio play written & directed by theater student, Dakota Collins, starring Emma Miller, Tristan Ketcham, and Jackson Harwell. 

 

 

Lo Stronzo

The Sewanee Student Theatre Board presented a student-written, student-directed performance in the commedia dell’arte tradition.  Slapsticks, masks, double entendres, schemes, and disguises all culminate in a night of laughs and levity at Angel Park in downtown Sewanee on September 30 and October 1 of 2020.

Ugly Lies The Bone

UGLY LIES THE BONE is the story of a newly discharged soldier, Jess Knox, who has finally returned to her Florida hometown. She brings with her vivid memories of her tour in Afghanistan that have left her physically and emotionally scarred. Jess soon realizes that things at home have changed even more than she has.
