How we assess if a course is inclusive of sustainability topics:
  1. The concept of "sustainability" is explicitly mentioned,
  2. The interdependence of ecological and social/economic systems is addressed, AND/OR
  3. One or more sustainability challenges are directly addressed (e.g., an SDG target or Earth Charter principle)

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are focused on creating a just world, for only then can the systems be sustainable. Courses at Sewanee that are inclusive or focused on sustainability, therefore, address the intersections of power, economics, race, class, gender, the environment and more. These courses are taught, in part, to better understand how these societal systems are created, sustained, changed, or deconstructed and how they intersect within a specific discipline, time, piece of work, or context.

Every department at Sewanee has at least one
sustainable-inclusive academic course.
