Sewanee Benefits

Wellbeing & Support

Sometimes support means counseling. Sometimes it means help finding child care, getting legal guidance, talking through Medicare, making a financial plan, or navigating a short-term emergency. This page brings those support resources together in one place so you know where to start.

Emergency Financial Assistance

The Employee Emergency Assistance Fund is designed to provide short-term emergency support to eligible employees who have experienced financial hardship because of unexpected and unavoidable circumstances. Assistance may be available for expenses related directly to the emergency or for basic living expenses that cannot be met because of that hardship.
Who can apply?
Regular full-time employees normally scheduled for at least 1,560 hours per year, regular part-time employees normally scheduled for at least 1,000 hours per year, and full-time employees with term appointments of at least one year may apply.
Examples of eligible expenses
Examples may include rent or mortgage for a primary residence, utilities, certain home repairs, vehicle repairs needed to get to and from work, and out-of-pocket medical expenses for you or your eligible dependents.
Funding limit
Eligible employees may receive one grant award per fiscal year, up to $2,500 net after tax. Approved awards are grossed up to cover applicable taxes so the after-tax amount matches the approved grant.
Timing
Applications should generally be for unpaid expenses and submitted within 14 days of the expense, or within 14 days after the bill due date for billed expenses such as utilities.
How the process works
Employees can submit requests for assistance directly to Human Resources. To be processed, the application must meet all required criteria, including employment eligibility verification, documentation of the expense, and documentation of financial need such as a recent tax return and statement of assets. HR receives applications to maintain confidentiality, redacts identifying details, and forwards complete applications to the committee for review.
How long it takes
Once all required documentation has been submitted, decisions are typically made within 1–2 business days. Approved applications are usually funded on the next available payroll, and if payroll timing does not fit the need, a check may be issued within one business day after approval.
