The College provides a resolution process in which members of the Sewanee community may resolve violations of the Code of Conduct with mutual respect for one another.

The University has two hearing boards who hear cases as a part of the resolution process for potential violations of the Code of Conduct or other policies. Hearing board members on both boards receive training from the Office of Community Standards in policy application, decision-making, and communication.

The Community Hearing Board

The Community Hearing Board is a panel of one faculty member, one staff member, and one student per case who hear cases involving both individual students and Recognized Student Organizations. The hearing board manages cases with higher level or more complex circumstances as those cases tend to have an impact on not only other students, but also the broader community. Having faculty, staff, and student representation helps to address the community impact of alleged behaviors.

The Office of Community Standards actively recruits faculty and staff to serve as members of the Community Hearing Board each year. Please email communitystandards@sewanee.edu if you are interested in joining the board.

The Student conduct board

The Student Conduct Board (SCB) is a panel of students who hear cases involving individual students when the outcomes of removal from student housing, suspension, and expulsion are not recommendations from the Resolution Facilitator. Members of the SCB also serve on the Community Hearing Board and Appeals Board when a student is needed in these cases. The SCB is currently expanding its role to include providing more outreach to students about the expectations in the Code of Conduct and navigating the resolution process.

Student Conduct Board members are selected by an application and interview process coordinated by the Office of Community Standards with the current SCB chair. Contact communitystandards@sewanee.edu if you are interested in joining the Student Conduct Board.
