Sign up to offer a short introductory class (approx. 30 minutes) outside of regular class hours, focusing on some aspect of trans life: history, art, culture, politics, and science. These would require no preliminary prep or reading by students, and are not conceived as venues for students to debate, nor are they primarily intended for trans students to lead discussion.

The goal is to educate students about aspects of transgender experience and identity across a wide variety fields of expertise, so that transgender people don’t have to carry the burden of teaching alone.

While we do not expect to convince those who set themselves against transgender rights, we do hope to provide allies and potential allies with education, and create opportunities for them to join in solidarity with transgender students here at Sewanee, and with transgender people throughout Tennessee and the world.

The Division of DEI has kindly offered to promote the Teach-in and help with organization and logistics. If you are interested, even if you are not sure exactly what you would teach, please contact Matt Irvin, Stephanie McCarter, or Eric Thurman, who are happy to talk over possibilities.
