Funding Priorities
  • Supporting pedagogical development and teaching innovations informed by the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Long-term impact on teaching and learning.
  • Developing or significantly enhancing teaching or courses which [a] connect faculty’s research, writing, or creative expression more closely to teaching, or [b] meet pressing curricular needs.
  • Professional enhancement or programs that contribute to effective teaching.
  • Significant course development or revision activities other than these listed above.

Teaching Enrichment Grants are limited to $2,000 and are awarded in fall and spring by the CfT Advisory Board

In general, Center for Teaching funds will not be used for materials or projects which are more appropriately supported by other University budgets (e.g., Research Grants, departmental budgets). In addition, we cannot fund equipment purchases, support an individual's progress toward an advanced degree, or provide further support for awardees who do not file final reports. While stipends are generally not funded in TE grants, stipends of up to $500 may be requested by applicants whose project makes a contribution to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Examples of such contributions might include a paper to be submitted to a teaching-focused journal or a conference or poster presentation.

Examples of proposals that enhance teaching and learning
  • A workshop at Sewanee for faculty working jointly on course development. ‌
  • Attendance at an off-campus workshop or conference focused on teaching or acquiring knowledge and skills related to the participants' teaching assignments.
  • A workshop at Sewanee which focuses on a particular method of teaching or the use of a particular technology in teaching.
  • Bringing to Sewanee a consultant to work with a group of faculty members on course development or some other aspect of teaching.
  • Developing innovative courses using emerging technologies or new pedagogies (active learning, problem-based learning, etc).
  • Course development projects for which the goal is to acquire information and materials from sources located away from Sewanee.‌
Deadlines and Funding Requirements

Teaching Enrichment Grants are awarded on a regular cycle in the fall and spring semesters. Only one application per faculty member per semester.

All University faculty are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to those who have not received past Innovative Teaching grant support. Repeat requests for previously funded activities are unlikely to be supported.

Please note: These grant applications are not reviewed on a rolling basis; applicants will be contacted roughly two weeks after the due date for the current cycle (usually in September for the fall semester and in February for the spring).

Please specify in the application which funds will be spent by the end of the fiscal year (June 30th), and which will be spent after that day. All awards require final reports covering finances and the project itself. To avoid IRS penalties, the University requires receipts for all expenses approved in the award. Although an award's financial accounting must be completed by the aforementioned deadline, the report on the outcome of the project itself is due no later than 30 days after completion of the project. When appropriate, the Center for Teaching encourages that awardees share the results of their project in a departmental or campus forum.
