The University Art Gallery is delighted to present Ming Ying Hong's The One With The... Amalgamations, an exhibition of two series of intricate graphite, charcoal, color pencil, and pastel drawings.

Ming Ying Hong will be on campus to present her work in conversation with Dr. Alison Miller on Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. in Guerry Auditorium.

Both series, Amalgamations and The One With The..., speak to skill, care, and time. Both offer representational fragments that snare viewers. Both are uncomfortable and disrupt expectations.

With Amalgamations, the artist offers the viewer hybrid forms that bring together categories and experiences normally treated as opposites—inside and outside, male and female, pleasure and pain. The boundaries between categories disappear, and the values and hierarchies assigned to those categories are destabilized and questioned.

In The One With The..., the artist’s fragmented and caricature-like self-portraits confront—and share—the uncomfortable and threatening experience of inhabiting a racialized body, perceived through the filters of misconceptions and stereotypes.

Ming Ying Hong’s remarkable drawings ask the viewer to stop and process what they see differently. Amalgamations and The One With The… prompt us to think about how we understand, categorize, and value visual information, and to consider carefully what’s at stake in that process.

The One With The... Amalgamations will be on view Oct. 25 through Dec. 11, 2023. Please note that the UAG is closed for academic breaks, including Thanksgiving.

Ming Ying Hong earned a BFA in drawing and painting, with a minor in art history, from the University of Kentucky, and earned an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis as a Danforth Scholar, with demonstrated leadership in service. In 2021, Ming Ying Hong was the South Arts State Fellow for Mississippi. She is now an associate professor at the Rhode Island School of Design.
