Terry Papillon serves as the Academic Dean and professor of Classical languages.  Formerly, he was assistant vice provost at Virginia Tech and the director of the University Honors Program, as well as professor of Classics. He has a B.A. in Classics from St. Olaf College. He has a Ph.D. in Classical Philology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and taught in North Carolina, Minnesota, and Wisconsin before joining the faculty at Virginia Tech in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures.

Papillon teaches ancient Greek, Latin, classical civilization, mythology, and rhetoric, and has extensive experience leading study abroad programs. Papillon’s research specialty is Greek rhetoric, particularly the Greek rhetorician Isocrates. He is the author of two books and numerous articles and book chapters, and has been editor of the online Classics journal Electronic Antiquity.
