Mid Autumn Moon Festival, 2024

The Chinese Residential Learning Community hosted a Mid-Autumn Moon Festival where students enjoyed majiang, badminton, mask-painting, and a bonfire while enjoying mooncakes and Chinese food from Shan's.

Summer 2024 Asian Studies Trip

Asian Studies students spent three weeks exploring the art and culture of Taiwan and Japan accompanied by Dr. Alison Miller, professor of Asian Art History and Marcus Murphy, professor of Chinese.

Chiu's movie elevates the contributions of early Chinese immigrants to the mid-South following the Civil War and also sheds light on the complex racial history of the Mississippi Delta. 

First Free Chinese Summer Language Program in 2024

Lecture on Chinese Forensic Drama

There will be a lecture on drama and legal investigations in early modern Chinese this coming Friday, featuring guest speaker, Dr. Wang Guojun, Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Vanderbilt. His talk is titled "Gender of Knowledge: Virtues and Crimes in the Forensic Drama of Early Modern China."

This talk will take place in the Language Lab (Gailor 225) from 1:30 to 2:30 PM on April 28th (Friday)

Chinese Songs at International Karaoke Night

Students worked hard practicing their songs in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, and Spanish.  There was food from around the world and prizes for best solo, small group, and whole class acts.  Read more to find out who won and hear a bit of their songs.

 

8th Annual International Karaoke Night

Talk by Dr. Jiwei Xiao

Dr. Jiwei Xiao, who formerly taught Chinese at Sewanee, will deliver a talk entitled "What is a detail?: Reading Chinese Fiction as World Literature."  In addition to the lecture, Dr. Xiao will be at the Tower Room upstairs in McClurg at noon for a discussion over lunch.

7th Annual International Karaoke Night

The 7th Annual International Karaoke Night was held on October 27, 2021 and featured acts in all the modern languages that Sewanee offers: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. There was fun, food, music, and incredible talent on display.

Stop Asian Hate!

Please join us Monday evening (4/19 at 7:30) at Convocation Hall as faculty and students discuss the recent rise in hate crimes and bias incidents against Asians and Asian-Americans across the US. In addition to celebrating and standing in solidarity with our Asian and Asian-American community, panelists will touch on how to be allies and make our community a more welcoming place for all. 



Lantern Festival Concert with Wu Fei

Lunar New Year 2021 Celebration

Students celebrated the Year of the Ox on February 12 by playing games and drinking boba tea at the Asian House.

6th Annual International Karaoke Night, 2020

Students gathered at Cravens Hall for the The 6th Annual International Karaoke Night on Saturday, October 24.  It was a little different from past International Karaoke Nights when students sang live in front of a panel of judges and an audience.  Instead,  they submitted videos of themselves singing in the language that they are studying.  The videos representing Chinese, French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish were screened at the event, and students and faculty were able to view the videos and vote online in person or remotely.

Live in the Asian House

The Asian House organizes fun events such as this Lunar New Year Celebration at McClurg, which had dancing dragons and Asian cuisine! Apply to live in the Asian House for next academic year 2020-2021! Applications are due on March 1, 2020!

Chinese Song Wins at the 5th Annual International Karaoke Night

The 5th Annual International Karaoke Night took place on November 7, 2019 at the Tiger Bay Pub. There were songs in 8 different languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, and Spanish.

The Asian House sponsored a tea ceremony to try Asian teas and meet some current members of the Asian House on March 1, 2020.
