The University of the South, commonly known as Sewanee, comprises a nationally ranked residential College of Arts and Sciences and a School of Theology.  Funding and professional development 

  • Each tenure track faculty receives up to $2000 per year in conference travel.
  • Start-up funds are available to help you launch your next research project.
  • Library funds are available to help you acquire the resources you need for your teaching and research.
  • We have an active Center for Teaching that offers small grants and programming to assist your pedagogical development and runs a robust, year-round new faculty development program.
  • There are ample external resources from the Associated Colleges of the South and other partners, such as research grants and mentoring programs.
  • Sewanee has a Sponsored Research Office that can help you connect to external grants to support your scholarship and creative activities.
  • The Faculty Research Grants Committee disperses funds up to $5000 per academic year to support travel or data collection for your research.
  • We have a strong sabbatical program in which faculty are eligible for a research leave every 7 years, and faculty on the tenure-track are eligible for a pre-tenure sabbatical in their 3rd year.
  • Early career faculty can also apply for a Kennedy Fellowship, which provides funding over a 3-year period, to support a major research project.
  • There are additional, competitive funds to support place-based teaching and learning, international travel for research, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and more.
  • Mentoring is available through departments. Additional mentoring opportunities for faculty of color are available through partnerships with the Associated Colleges of the South.

 Campus partnerships

  • Sewanee is designated by the American Association of Colleges and Universities as a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Center. Faculty can affiliate with the TRHT in its mission to foster a movement that empowers the people of Sewanee to dismantle racist hierarchies and build just and equitable communities.
  • The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion also houses our Indigenous Engagement Initiative, the office of Equal Opportunity, Title IX, ADA, and the Office of Inclusive Excellence. This Division supports faculty in their efforts to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion in the curriculum.
  • Our award-winning Office of Civic Engagement can help you connect to local partners to design and deliver community service projects and courses.
  • Sewanee has a robust Office of Undergraduate Research offering grants to help you engage students in your research.

 Course load

We offer a rigorous academic experience with a student-to-professor ratio of 10:1 and an average class size of 17. Tenure track faculty teach five courses in the academic year. There is an option to teach in the summer for additional compensation.
