SCP AmeriCorps Program and Sewanee Volunteers Revitalize Historic St. Marks Community Center for 9/11 Day of Service.

On the 9/11 Day of Service, SCP AmeriCorps members, students from Sewanee's Bonner and Canale programs, and volunteers through the Pathways to Civic Engagement program came together to honor the historically underrepresented St. Marks Community Center and Garden. This initiative, located on the South Cumberland Plateau, is dedicated to preserving Black history in the region and fostering community revitalization.

Volunteers worked diligently to tend the garden beds, assist with landscaping, and construct much-needed outdoor furniture and shelves. These efforts support the community center’s mission of drawing members of the Black community back to the plateau while safeguarding the area's rich cultural heritage.

St. Marks Community Center is entirely volunteer-operated, relying on the passion and dedication of local citizens and volunteers like these, who share the goal of preserving the plateau's significant Black history for future generations. The 9/11 Day of Service serves as a reminder of the power of community action in keeping history alive and building connections through service.
