Here at Sewanee, the South Cumberland Plateau AmeriCorps program located in the Office of Civic Engagement, supported by Volunteer Tennessee Service Commission, and in partnership with South Cumberland Community Fund, collaborates with more than ten organizations, including the BetterFI, Growing Roots, Mountain T.O.P., and SPARQ (Arts in the Burg), to tackle issues such as financial literacy, music and art education, pre-kindergarten literacy, food insecurity, and housing accessibility, among others. SCP AmeriCorps offers a living allowance between $1,100 and $22,500 to support members during their service, along with a the opportunity to access the Segal Educational Award upon completing their service term. Members obtain training and support to effectively assist individuals in their designated service area while enhancing personal and professional competencies to advance their future professions.
During the current program year 2024-2025, SCP AmeriCorps has 11 officially pledged members and is actively seeking more civically motivated individuals to serve with community partners in their communities. Anticipating our most extensive recruitment campaign in Spring for the summer 2025 food security initiative, the South Cumberland Summer Meal Program, a ten-week community service initiative aimed at combating poverty on the Plateau by providing complimentary meals to children and youth. Summer members significantly contribute to mitigating summer slide for children aged 2-18 when public schools are closed and the sole meal provided during the academic year is unavailable. During the summer, AmeriCorps participants support diverse roles inside several NGOs, social services, and governmental institutions when not providing meals.
