The South Cumberland Plateau (SCP) AmeriCorps Project is a rural community initiative dedicated to reducing negative social determinants of health through impactful direct service partnerships. 

Hosted by the University of the South in Middle Tennessee, this program operates across Franklin, Grundy, Marion, Coffee, and Sequatchie counties. SCP AmeriCorps connects civic-minded students and community members with local organizations to address critical community needs. Key focus areas include hunger relief, financial literacy, education and tutoring, substance abuse prevention, health and wellness, housing access, and green space development.

Where we SERVE

The SCP AmeriCorps Project serves communities on and around the South Cumberland Plateau, specifically in:

  • Franklin County
  • Grundy County
  • Marion County
  • Coffee County
  • Sequatchie County

These predominantly rural Appalachian communities face systemic poverty and limited access to essential resources. SCP AmeriCorps is committed to fostering sustainable community development and improving the quality of life throughout this region.

How We Serve

AmeriCorps members serve as dedicated volunteers, providing critical support to nonprofit, faith-based, government, and community organizations. Members can serve part-time or full-time, receiving comprehensive training and professional development in community outreach, volunteer management, and program coordination. This hands-on experience builds members' skills and enhances local organizations' capacity to effectively meet community needs.

Service activities include:

  • Distributing nutritious meals to combat hunger and food insecurity
  • Offering financial literacy workshops to promote economic stability
  • Tutoring and mentoring youth to enhance educational outcomes
  • Supporting substance abuse prevention and recovery programs

South Cumberland Summer Meal Program

The annual AmeriCorps Summer Program is a short-term, intensive ten-week community service program to directly support anti-poverty efforts on the Plateau, focusing on alleviating child hunger and reducing summer learning loss.
