The Sewanee Spanish Immersion in Healthcare program includes both a course in Spanish (SPAN321) and the opportunity to shadow doctors in a public hospital in Spain. In addition to reviewing and consolidating vocabulary and grammar relevant to health professions, the course examines the cultural determinants of health. In Spain, students work directly with doctors in different hospital units and meet with professors to reflect upon the experience. This program fulfills the Spanish Major's study abroad requirement.

Requirements: SPAN 204 or 299+ or placement.

Dates: Specific days TBD, but consider the week right after graduation in May through the first week of June. These dates allow students to come back in time for further summer opportunities (internships, shadowing, etc.). Students who desire to stay in Spain are allowed to do so.

This course is offered in connection with a medical trip abroad in Spain and is aimed at intermediate and advanced students in Spanish. The initial on-campus portion of the course focuses on the acquisition of vocabulary pertinent to health care and on the practice of oral and listening skills in professional settings through the discussion of various readings and audiovisual materials. While abroad, students shadow doctors, observe doctor-patient interactions, and develop an understanding of the cultural dimensions of health and wellness. Students will engage in cultural excursions and work closely with Sewanee faculty to reflect on their intercultural experience.
