Daniel Burnfin joined the Department of Philosophy as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 2025-6. Previously, he served as a Humanities Teaching Fellow at the University of Chicago. He received his B.A., M.A., and MPhil. in philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). He has also studied at Heidelberg University (Germany), the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), and UMass Amherst, where he received his M.A., in German studies. He received his PhD in philosophy and Germanic studies in 2022 from the University of Chicago.
His research concerns the history of modern German philosophy, social and political philosophy, and the philosophy of economics. In his teaching, he tries to bring philosophy and real-world problems as close to one another as possible.
Currently, he is working on several projects related to political economy and the works of Hegel, Marx, Keynes, and Sohn-Rethel. Outside the university, his passions include travel and exploring nature, languages, and politics.
