The lecture offers an introduction of Hong Kong art and visual culture from the 2000s to the present with a focus on women artists’ practices. Hong Kong was a British colony from the mid- nineteenth century until 1997 when its sovereignty was returned to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Around the time of the handover, artists and scholars reflected on the city’s identity in relation to the PRC in the post-colonial era. The socio-political movements in recent years heightened the critical discourse of gender, race, and human rights in the city.

This lecture demonstrates that feminist dialogues in women artists’ works are vital interventions in Hong Kong’s continuous struggles for an equitable and democratic society amidst the civil disobedience movements.
