“I would recommend being an art history major at Sewanee for the amazing professors here. Their passion for art and teaching has grown my passion and made these four years so special.”

-Caroline Kirtley, C’26, Delaware
“My favorite part of being an art history major is the small class sizes, which allow for a super in-depth learning experience! I love being able to learn from professors who are super passionate about their specialities….I see my art history degree helping me in my future career by strengthening my writing skills and cross-cultural understanding! I am not sure what I want to do yet, so art history is super helpful by providing me with differing perspectives on many possible career paths.”

-Callie Murphy, C’28
“I would recommend joining the Art History major to anyone considering it. Since joining the major, I have made amazing connections with numerous professors because of our intimate setting. I have also had the opportunity to sharpen my skills in linguistics and critical thinking in visual analysis. While I am only a second-semester sophomore, these skills have greatly improved my vocabulary and cultural awareness.”

-Hufton Parker, C’28
“My favorite part about being an art history major is sharing my knowledge of art with friends and family. I love taking my friends to museums or on a walk in the city and getting to explain the art and architecture. It brings me so much joy to research art historical styles, and to get to share that with others is such a blessing!”

-Kailie Kelsey, C’27, Nashville, Tennessee

Celeste Maddux, C’24

Executive Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Digital Officer,  David Zwirner

How has your art history degree helped in your career?
My degree has been pivotal in the wide range of jobs I've had so far post-grad - from roles in PR to auction houses to my current position at a gallery, the skills I learned during my time as an art history major built the foundation for the hard and soft skills I use daily in my career.

What is your current role, and how does art history relate to it?
I currently work as an EA to the COO and CDO at David Zwirner. From an obvious standpoint, art history relates directly to the art we are selling (I even wrote my comp about a DZ represented artist!). I work on the more logistical/operational side of the gallery, so it's a lot of fun to still use my art history knowledge in my work.

What was your favorite part about being an art history major at Sewanee?
The people and the classes! Being a part of such a small major with people who felt equally passionate about art was so special - one of my favorite parts was hearing about everyone's post-grad plans and seeing the array of career paths my peers were taking.

Jan Deloizer, C’16

Lead, Quality Analyst. Safety and Regulatory Compliance Operations, TikTok USDS-JV

How has your art history degree helped in your career?
A degree in Art History gave me the credentials for entry-level internships and jobs to some of the most beautiful collections of art. The degree applied to museums around the world! When I was ready to grow, my studies prepared me for a competitive graduate school. While in school, I took on a tech job by advocating for my skills in visual literacy.

What is your current role, and how does art history relate to it?
I am currently a Quality Analyst for TikTok USDS. Art history relates to my everyday as I translate visual phenomena (short form video, photo, livestreaming, etc.)  into verbal context, policy, and guidance for Safety Regulatory and Compliance. The applications are endless!

What was your favorite part about being an art history major at Sewanee?
I loved committing to a topic or framework in each class. Going deep into a period, learning the lesser-known and how they relate to the magnum opus. It’s wonderful how professors focus and foster connections.

Laura (Crookston) Deleot, C’96

Co-founder of Circa Brand Agency

How has your art history degree helped in your career?
After Sewanee, I went on to study graphic design at The Portfolio Center. My art history degree gave me a strong creative foundation. It trained me to see patterns, understand context, and recognize how meaning is constructed through form, color, and composition. That perspective continues to shape how I approach branding today, where every decision is rooted in both strategy and storytelling.

What is your current role, and how does art history relate to it?
As a Branding Agency Owner, I serve as both COO and Executive Creative Director. Art history plays a constant role in that work, informing how I guide creative direction, evaluate design, and build brands that feel both timeless and culturally relevant. It also reinforces the importance of intention: understanding not just what something looks like, but why it exists and how it connects to a larger narrative.

What was your favorite part about being an art history major at Sewanee?
Spending time in the University library studying the masters. Sewanee was a place for dreaming, where you could slow down, look closely, and immerse yourself in ideas. That experience shaped not just how I see art, but how I think creatively.

“Studying art history abroad was one of the best decisions I made for my undergraduate degree. During the fall semester of my junior year, I spent six weeks each in Rome, Paris, and London, studying the most famous styles and artists in each location. I was able to translate my time in the Sewanee classroom into real experiences at museums, galleries, and archaeological sites with my abroad professors. Living in three different cities exposed me to more art than I could have imagined, and I left feeling extremely knowledgeable about European visual culture.”

-Joanie Farley, C'26, Richmond, Virginia

“Visiting Japan with Dr. Miller and Professor Marcus Murphy was an unforgettable experience. Learning about tea culture along with Buddhism in both Japan and Taiwan was enlightening. It was fascinating to learn about the complexities of both cultures. Beyond this, simply spending time with my professors and classmates in a new environment was truly special.”

-Heyward Bost, C'26, Atlanta, Georgia
