Alumni

We recently contacted all of our past anthropology majors and were pleased when many of them answered our call for information about their postgraduate career pursuits. Several of them included comments about the usefulness of the anthropology major in their current lives. Alumni said that their anthropology degree made it much easier for them to: "assess the viewpoints of others"; "bridge social and cultural gaps in business," "determine how brands will translate across the globe", "approach architecture from the perspective of how people use space," and that it provided "an excellent foundation for a career in public health."

Class of 2018

Joey Adams will work at Sewanee this summer as a VISTA/Americorps volunteer, and then will be a City Year Corps member in Washington, D.C. for the 2018-19 school year. Mary Bond has accepted a summer position as the assistant director of Tween Ministries at First United Church and will be saving money for her next step. Shiro Burnette will pursue a Master’s Degree in Museology at the University of Washington. Tieta Keetle will be a Wilderness Field Instructor learning more about occupational therapy as a possible career at SUWS of the Carolinas, a Wilderness Therapy program in Old Fort, North Carolina. Edgar Payano will be working this summer with lobbyists from Ducks Unlimited on wetland conservation, then will start the Coro Fellowship (a dynamic professional development program) in St. Louis, Missouri. Sarah Wilkerson will be working with Sewanee’s Conference services this summer.

Class of 2017

Josie Clark is working as a legal assistant at an immigration law firm in Portland, Oregon before going to law school to pursue immigration and human rights law. Isabella Lilly is working as a barista in Chattanooga for the time being. Sammie Meyers spent the summer of 2017 as a researcher in Sewanee’s Landscape Analysis lab and is now a member of the Organic Prayer Project Internship at St. Mary’s in Sewanee.

Class of 2016

Alexis Benedict will be in San Antonio working for City Year. Sarah Brown will attend the University of Sheffield in their Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology program. Hannah Clevenger will be attending the University of Memphis in their Masters' Applied Anthropology program. Madison Cornwell will be looking for museum and/or conservation work in Fort Worth, Texas this summer, and plans to attend graduate school in Ireland next spring. Annika Derham will be working for Sewanee's Physical Plant Services doing Geographic Information Systems this summer. Amy Lee will be interning in the Vector Control Division, Ministry of Health in conjunction with The Carter Center in Uganda doing national surveillance activities as well as data management and analysis.‌

Class of 2015

Helen Bartlett will work at the Children's Museum in Denver, Colorado. De'Nard Ford works for an international Christian organization named Cru as a college campus missionary. Alex Friedl is doing survey work this summer for Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research based in Huntsville, AL and will return to Sewanee in late august to work with Dr. Sherwood in a post-baccalaureate position devoted to the archaeology of Rebel's Rest. Sally Anne Greenwood is working at A Bar A Ranch in Wyoming while applying to the Peace Corps and other organizations to teach English in a Spanish-speaking country. Michelle Howell will move to Jackson, Wyoming and work for the non-profit City Kids Wilderness Project, working alongside underserved urban youth from the Washington, D.C. area in an effort to further explore how socio-economic status and race affect accessibility to education. Eva Moss will be working with Firsthand Foods, a sustainable meat aggregating business in Durham, NC this summer, and then will be attending Vermont Law School in the fall, for a Master of Food and Agriculture Law and Policy. Pierce Myers will spend the summer in intensive architecture studio coursework at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and next year will continue to teach architecture, shop class, and Spanish at the Episcopal School of Los Angeles, also working on developing several community engagement initiatives. Christina Smith is currently interning at the Chattanooga Zoo, and while working toward a more permanent zoo posting, will take a job with the United States Stoves Company. Hannah Elaine Babb Taylor will be working with AmeriCorps as a Vista Volunteer under Discover Together in Tracy City.

Class of 2014

Hadlea Eubanks will be working as an EMT in Macon, GA and taking prerequisite courses in pursuit of earning her Master of Science in Nursing to become a certified nurse-midwife. Shelby MacMillan will move to Asheville, NC and pursue a career in environmental education. Jane Millar will remain another year at Sewanee with a post-baccalaureate research fellowship, while applying to graduate programs in archaeology. Mason Niquette will work as a field technician doing archaeology in southern California, New Mexico and Utah for a firm based in Tucson, Arizona. Erin Ritchie will remain in Sewanee working with Conference Services until late July when she will start adventuring around the world. Chandler Sowden will return to Haiti following graduation to continue her study of using photography as a tool for discussion-based community development, eventually continuing her education in visual anthropology or documentary photography. Marshall Wilson will head back to Houston before beginning work as an archaeological field technician during the upcoming field season; later attending grad school and pursuing a career as a professional archaeologist.

Julia Christakos will be working for Blu Dot in Minneapolis this summer and has plans to move to Washington D.C. to pursue a career in marketing and public relations. Catherine Evans interned at the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge, then moved to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she works on the Vanderbilt Inpatient Cohort Study (VICS) until this fall when she will begin a Masters of Public Health degree in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in the Global Environmental Health Department. Watson Hartsoe will continue his explorations in education and social science research in studying youth empowerment in nontraditional educational settings in Honduras next year with a Fulbright grant. Cameron Herndon will be attending culinary school to pursue a career in health and the culinary arts. Callie Sims will spend the summer volunteering and coaching a youth-swim team in Asheville, North Carolina, before moving out west to work on a guest ranch, after which she'll apply to grad or law school. Liz Urquhart will be heading back home to New Orleans to take pre-requisite courses in hopes of attending either Physical or Occupational Therapy School in the future! woo!

Class of 2011

Sarah Louise Armour-Jones got her real estate license and is now with Crye-Leike in Chattanooga; she also works part-time at The Pet Placement Center (a non-kill animal shelter). Eleanor Carboneau is preparing to take the Foreign Service Officer Exam for the‌ U.S. State Department to work in an embassy or consulate abroad. Natalee Erb is pursuing a M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College of Education and Human Development. Catherine Frampton will work this summer as Assistant Program Director for Rockbrook Camp in Brevard, NC, and in the fall, will move to Asheville to pursue non-profit work related to women's empowerment and LGBT rights. Dean Hayes is pursuing graduate work in linguistics at the University of New Mexico. Mary Parham is traveling the world and following the slightest inclination.

Lauren Byram has applied for an M.A. in the cultural track of Appalachian studies at Appalachian State in North Carolina. Mary Conkling is working as an admissions counselor. Carson Dougherty is attending acting school in New York City. Lauren Fitzpatrick has applied for programs with Habitat for Humanity. Carrie Garrett is teaching kindergarten in Sattahip, Thailand. Molly Green is pursuing a Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Meredith Hoover is in law school in Arkansas. Charles Kramer has been working on a film for Sewanee's website. Sarah Frances McClure is working at Texas Children's Hospital for Baylor College of Medicine in research in pediatric anesthesiology. Brittany Roper is working with the Episcopal Church's Young Adult Service Corps in Bogotá, Colombia. Elizabeth West is attending law school in South Carolina.

Class of 2008

Fran Armour is currently living in Washington, DC, working at a charter school for children with cognitive disabilities, and is applying to graduate school for social work. Richard DeSalvo has been accepted to the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Sino-International Relations in Nanjing, China. Mary Lindemuth is attending medical school. Carrie Parris is pursuing her Ph.D. in Mesoamerican archaeology at Tulane. Sarah Wideman is currently an associate second grade teacher in a private school in Atlanta (Pace Academy) where she is in charge of social studies and grammar.

Class of 2007

Lauren Alston Bridges is currently working on a master's in historical archaeology at Illinois State University. Annie Cheek works in advertising in Tampa, FL. Julie Harper Barton Haynes is an admissions counselor in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Vanderbilt University and has applied to a M.Ed. program in organizational leadership at Peabody College. Alex Hill is pursuing a Ph.D in biological anthropology at Penn State where his research foci are evolutionary psychology and behavioral ecology, specifically as they relate to human mating. Stephanie Khouri is finishing law school at the University of Arkansas where she is associate notes editor for the Law Review; she plans to take the Georgia State Bar in July 2010. Shea Leatherman is currently teaching grade school Spanish language, culture, and geography at the Cathedral School of Little Rock, AR. Tracian Meikle earned her Master's and is now a Research Officer at the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica. Jane Moss has been working as a local broadcast media buyer for The Martin Agency in Richmond, VA, but recently received a scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where she will pursue her M.A. in interior design. Almire Sidik is currently an intern for Looking Glass.

Class of 2006

Jason Box is the assistant tennis coach for men and women at Bates College and is the first coach to win the Assistant Coach of the Year for the Northeast Region in both the men's and women's divisions in the same year. Hannah Cail (nee Schremser) is currently writing her master's thesis for the University of Montana on the cultural significance of domestic dogs at the Bridge River Site of southern British Columbia, and plans to get her Ph.D. in anthropology/archaeology. Tina Glickman studied design in New York City. Audrey Kerr is Events and Operations Manager for the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, a United Nations foundation. Shawn Means received a master's in Urban and Environmental Planning (M.U.E.P.) from the University of Virginia and is now working in Nashville for Gresham, Smith and Partners, an architecture, engineering and planning firm. Lindsey Miller got her MPH from Emory University Rollins School of Public Health concentrating on health policy and management, and now works with the health IT team at Booz Allen Hamilton in Virginia to harmonize standards for electronic health records. Eva Rocke is currently working as the sustainability coordinator at Feather River College, where she was also the farmers' market manager in 2009. Ted Smith is pursuing a degree in dentistry. David Zeman was recently admitted to the University of Michigan's MSW program, and will begin his study there in the fall.

Class of 2005

Lauren Anderson Stone works as the communications manager for The Diocese of West Tennessee where she is responsible for various functions related to the newspaper, e-newsletter and website for the group of Episcopal churches that fall between the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers. Lillian Azevedo is doing dissertation research with the Anguilla Archaeological and Historical Society for her Ph.D. at the University of Southampton's Centre for Maritime Archaeology. Chris Honeycutt has been serving as a Peace Corps volunteer since 2006 in The Gambia, West Africa, and has worked with the National Council for Art and Culture to protect and restore one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites: James Island. Ben Marsee graduated from UTK law school in 2008 and is currently a private practice lawyer in Cookeville, TN. David Zeman received his MA in medical anthropology from Case Western, and has since been exploring community organizing and small-scale organic farming through volunteer work with Americorps and WWOOF.

Class of 2004

Mac Brown has been a chaplain of the Episcopal School of Knoxville, a member of the Board of Trustees for Sewanee: The University of the South, and is now Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries for Grace Episcopal Church and plans to pursue ordination as an Episcopal priest. Wynter Elder (nee Jones) has worked as a paralegal and recently applied to the master's in mass communication at MTSU. Barbie Green spent 4 years teaching in Japan (for the JET Program and at a private company in Tokyo), and is now in the M.Ed. program in school counseling at UNC-Chapel Hill. Jill Marsee (nee Birdwell) graduated from law school at UTK and now works in a private practice in Cookeville where she handles domestic relations and juvenile cases. Ethan Pinney is teaching special education in New York City and attending graduate school in Education. Hayley Shelton worked for a human rights NGO and is now attending law school. Mona Scruggs volunteered with the Peace Corps in Panama before pursuing her Masters Degree in Community Planning at Auburn, where she has also recently worked with a non-profit organization focused on water quality issues. Laura Szapiro pursued a medical degree. Ann Wil Wingfield received her M.A. in teaching at Piedmont College in Athens, GA and is currently teaching first grade in Chicago, IL. Carrie Wills (nee Lawson) worked as a volunteer coordinator for the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at UAMS and is currently taking the prerequisite courses necessary for admittance to nursing school.

Kate Graves received an M.S. in environmental policy from Michigan Technological University and is now the program director at Island Press in Washington, D.C. Charlotte Hutton got her master's in historical preservation at the University of Washington and is now working in Hawaii. Elizabeth Warner (nee Mann) practices law in New York City. Elizabeth Weinman got her M.A. at Texas Tech University in Museum Science and is currently the registrar at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Maryann Wong is pursuing her master's degree at Columbia University.

Laura Burgette started UTK veterinary school in August of 2009 and is planning to get her DVM and an MPH as she is interested in veterinary public health. Beth Jacob-Files works at Oregon Health Science University as a research associate & project manager in the department of Family Medicine where she coordinates research grants and consults on qualitative research methodology, evaluation and analysis of women's health and access to preventative health care. Kate O'Mara received her master's in journalism from Columbia University and now works in Washington, DC.

Class of 2001

Mark Asmussen is assigned to the Horse Mounted Unit in Washington, DC. with the US Park Police, a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of the Interior/National Park Service. Winslett Carr attends Chinese medical school in Portland, OR at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. Rachel Hall Clifford completed an M.S. in medical anthropology at Oxford University, and a Ph.D. in anthropology and an M.P.H. in international health at Boston University, and currently has a post-doctoral research position on a multinational African malaria project based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Patrick Hayden received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon at Eugene. Yuki Ito received her M.P.H. from Columbia and works in New York City hospitals. Jenn Phillips is a middle school science teacher at Greensboro Montessori School with a certificate in environmental education. Winsy Pittinos works on consumer rights as a cognitive anthropologist/account planner studying the general habits and behaviors of consumers, as well as market trends for an advertising agency in Greenville, SC. Beth Saer received her master's in sociology from Vanderbilt. Ian Scott received his master's in architecture from the University of Georgia at Athens and currently works for a landscape architecture firm in Boulder, Colorado.

Kate Bishop participated in Teach for America, then got her master's in literacy at Teachers College, Columbia and is now teaching at a charter school in the Bronx. Leslie Burton received a master's in anthropology from the London School of Economics and now works at Marshall University. Hilary Larson received her M.A. in medical anthropology from the University of Colorado and now works for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in the Nutrition and Physical Activity Program. Gina Longinotti completed her M.S. in nursing at Yale University School of Nursing and is now a women's health and adult primary care nurse practitioner working in obstetrics & gynecology. Summer Martins got an MPH in Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota and currently does research for the Section of Family Planning at the University of Chicago. Natalie Nimerala practices law. Jen Thomas got her master's of nurse anesthesia at UAB and is now working as a certified registered nurse anesthetist in Mobile, AL.

Class of 1999

Amber Pewitt volunteered with the Peace Corps in Tanzania and then attended medical school. Jessica Rosein works for NGOs in Washington, DC and the Philippines. Samantha Sutphin practices environmental law.

Class of 1998

Ashley Duva is the chief operating officer and chief compliance officer of Strategic Global Advisors, LLC and is responsible for the compliance, operations and trading of international securities at the firm. Amy Fannon was director of development and marketing at First Montessori School of Atlanta, and is now a Montessori teacher herself. Jason Emery got his M.A. from LSU and is currently employed by URS Corporation working as an archaeologist; he is also the State of Louisiana liaison to FEMA to ensure Section 106 compliance under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) for the Hurricane recovery work associated with Katrina/Rita. David Harker is a partner in a commercial construction company where he runs the commercial interiors division and focuses on Data Centers, Class A office and building renovations.

Class of 1997

Jane Ann Blackney got her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Florida and is employed both by the Arkansas Archeological Survey as the station archeologist at Toltec Mounds State Park and by the University of Arkansas as an assistant professor. Niklas Hultin is currently a visiting assistant professor of anthropology at Swarthmore College who received his L.L.M. in human rights law from Queen's University Belfast and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. Robbie Spruill Kalish received an M.A. in teaching in early childhood education and currently teaches preschool. Coleman Rose completed an M.S. in sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently teaching a Spanish Immersion Kindergarten class at Tyler Elementary School in Washington, DC.

Class of 1996

Virginia Holland got her M.P.H. from Tulane University School of Public Health and currently manages a youth suicide prevention project in Jacksonville, Florida. Trent Lloyd got her M.A. in landscape architecture at the University of Washington and currently has her own business designing residential, corporate and housing development landscapes.

Class of 1995

Jane Campbell Kelly is VP of operations for Blakeford At Home in Nashville where she develops and runs programs that translate the typical model of retirement community care for those who are actively choosing to age at home. Burns Rogers received his Master's of Public Health in epidemiology and a Ph.D. in health education and promotion at UAB and has been working at the Metro Public Health Department in Nashville as an epidemiologist since then. Mary Rossi received her M.A. from Western Washington University and currently works as program director for the nonprofit program APT-Applied Preservation Technologies which provides cultural resource planning services to tribes, government agencies, developers, cultural resource professionals, and private landowners.

Class of 1993

Brad Adams is an employment lawyer specializing in defending corporations against employment-related legal claims. Alec Badenoch currently teaches media and cultural studies at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and published his first book, Voices in Ruins, a cultural history of German radio, in 2008. Mary Margaret Roberts got her M.A. in Southern studies and is currently executive director of university alumni relations.

Catrien Van Assendelft Griffiths teaches environmental science at an IB boarding school in Arizona.

Cate Nance currently works for the investment management firm Vanguard where she is a project manager for major initiatives of Vanguard's brand management team.

Bess Manning is currently curator of collections and exhibits at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History in College Station, Texas. Liz Peterson was a professional opera singer for five years, and then got her Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary and is now a Presbyterian minister. Jai Sanders worked in music retail and as a production coordinator at the Production Music Library which he left in 2005 to become a stay-at-home father.
