Welcome, Sewanee Families!

Angus and Wandy Hughes, Chairs

Welcome to the Mountain!

You’ll hear that greeting many times in the weeks and months ahead. Please know it’s heartfelt from every single person who shares it. Sewanee is a special place, and we encourage your student to embrace everything the Domain has to offer.

We are Angus and Wandy Hughes, P’28, from Houston, and we have the honor of serving as this year’s chairs of the Sewanee Parents’ Council. We fell in love with Sewanee the first time our son, George, C’28, visited the campus. The education he’s receiving goes far beyond the classroom—within the span of a semester, he took courses in finance, Italian film, and Chinese, and he learned how to fly a plane!

Joining the Sewanee Parents’ Council was the first meaningful step we took in becoming more engaged with the University. To be perfectly honest, our initial desire was to make a few new friends and learn more about campus life. We’ve indeed found wonderful friendships through our membership, but we’ve gained so much more.

One major highlight of our time on the Council has been meeting Sewanee’s extraordinary faculty and hearing about the customized research opportunities they provide students—mentorship experiences that bigger universities simply cannot offer. If you ever get the chance to meet Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Catherine Cavagnaro, who currently chairs the Mathematics Department, grab a cup of coffee and hear about the doors she’s opening for math majors!

We’ve also enjoyed getting insider updates about campus operations and the Sewanee Village from Vice President for Economic Development David Shipps and hearing about the Class of 2030 from Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Alan Ramirez. With every introduction and conversation, we’ve felt more connected to the Sewanee community.

The Sewanee Parents’ Council is always seeking new members, and we hope you’ll consider joining. Participation is an investment in the University, but we’ve found it’s also a gift toward our own Sewanee experience.

With best wishes,
Angus and Wandy, P’28

Ecce Quam Bonum (EQB): “Behold how good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity.”

Greetings, Sewanee parents!

We are excited to be this year’s Sewanee Parents’ Council vice-chairs. Both of our daughters are Sewanee girls. Our older daughter, Heyward, graduated in the spring of 2026, and her younger sister, Anne, just wrapped up her freshman year.

We feel so lucky that they have been able to experience Sewanee! We have found that the professors really know the students and take a genuine interest in them, giving them guidance and inspiration through some very formative years.

Sewanee is a magical place—there are so many wonderful traditions here. The whole Sewanee vibe is off the charts. Everyone is friendly and thoughtful, and the campus is beautiful and has so much to offer! Luckily, we live not too far away in Atlanta, and we try to get up to the Domain as often as we can.

We have really loved being a part of the Sewanee Parents’ Council. Bess Turner, who organizes our meetings and activities, is amazing and can answer any questions or concerns you may have, or direct you to someone who can. The biannual meetings are informative and really make you feel connected to what is happening on the Mountain. Through the Council, we have met so many other nice parents and have learned about unique programs and student experiences from professors, students, and staff.

We’ve found that both of our girls have really thrived and grown under the EQB motto at Sewanee. We have loved being welcomed into the Sewanee family!

Hope to see you on campus soon!
