Eligibility
To be eligible for short-term study away, a student currently enrolled at Sewanee must:
- Have completed at least one semester of full-time study at Sewanee
- Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average
- Pass academic and conduct screening by the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Global Citizenship. The screening will consider the severity and frequency of any social violations and the nature and history of any Honor Code violations. Students on Institutional Probation will not be cleared to study abroad
- Meet the specific requirements for the program to which they apply
- Complete all documentation required by the Office of Global Citizenship for study abroad.
To be eligible for short-term study away, a student who is not enrolled at Sewanee must:
- Be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the time of the application deadline*
- Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average
- Submit an academic and conduct screening form to the Office of Global Citizenship and be approved by the Office of Global Citizenship for participation
- Meet the specific requirements for the program to which they apply
- Complete all documentation required by the Office of Global Citizenship for study abroad.
*A student who is not enrolled as an undergraduate at the time they apply to the program may petition the Office of Global Citizenship for eligibility if:
- They are enrolled in a graduate program of study at the time they apply to the program; OR
- They graduated from Sewanee, Rhodes College, or Centre College within 12 months of the application deadline
GETTING STARTED

Sewanee students use their Banner ID to login to the VIA-TRM platform. Once logged in, they create their VIA profile and can review programs and complete necessary study abroad paperwork.

Available in Via. Listed as "Summer 2025 Request to Study Away" under Programs.
STUDY AWay AGREEMENT
The Study Away Agreement will be sent through AdobeSign to your student email. Students should read it carefully before initialing, signing, and submitting.

FINDING A PROGRAM
There are hundreds of authorized summer programs listed in Via-TRM.
1. Go to "programs."
2. Select "authorized."
3. Use the filters and search bar to help find programs that interest you.
If you find a program that interests you that is NOT listed in Via-TRM, please notify the summer study abroad advisor, Georgia Hewitt.
APPLYING TO A PROGRAM
Once you have chosen a program, you should apply directly through the program provider's website and through Via-TRM. Program application deadlines vary by program.
APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS (recommended)
Many study abroad providers and governmental/educational organizations offer study abroad scholarships. Opportunities are also listed on our website. Scholarship deadlines vary, so students should be proactive with the application process. Please note that the Sewanee Pledge only applies to semester study away programs. Students are responsible for coordinating financing for their summer programs.
COMPLETE REQUIRED PAPERWORk (April 15)
- Due April 1 - Application for Degree Credit for Off-Campus Study
Submit the completed form directly to the Office of Global Citizenship. Students going on Sewanee faculty-led programs do not complete this form. - Due April 15 - Waiver of Liability & Hold Harmless Agreement (waivers are sent through Adobe Sign)
- Due April 15 - Final Authorization to Study Away (FASA). You will find this form in VIA under the FORMS tab on your profile page.
- Due April 15 - GDPR - Students studying abroad in the European Economic Area (EEA) must complete an additional form known as GDPR. You will find this form in VIA under the FORMS tab on your profile page.
