The Center for Teaching is pleased to offer opportunities for faculty to receive mid-semester feedback this semester through our Facilitated Course Reflection (FCR) program. In previous years, this has been referred to as the Mid-Semester Group Analysis program (MSGA).
WHAT DOES THIS ENTAIL?
FCR provides formative feedback––not evaluative feedback––to faculty members about what their students perceive to be helping or hindering their learning at the mid-point of the semester. No kind of “evaluation” or “grade” for the faculty member is given. An FCR involves four steps:
1. A trained facilitator (who is a Sewanee faculty member) and the faculty member requesting feedback will establish a time to visit one of the faculty member's classes and discuss basic information about the course.
2. The facilitator will visit the end of the faculty member's class period for 30 minutes, engaging in 3-5 minutes of observation and approximately 25 minutes of discussion with students (the faculty member leaves before the discussion with students begins). This discussion begins with students reflecting on their own engagement with the course and continues with the focus shifting through all aspects of the course.
3. The facilitator will meet with the faculty member within a few days after the class visit to share and discuss the students' reflections.
4. The faculty member will spend at least a few minutes during the next class period speaking with students about how the FCR feedback may inform the remainder of the course and any changes they seek to make.
*(Please note that your involvement in the FCR program will be kept completely confidential and will in no way be associated with promotion and tenure processes. Feedback from FCRs will also not be shared with supervisors, including Department Chairs or Deans. Names and email addresses captured on the sign-up form will only be used for scheduling FCRs, not for long-term records. Any reports produced about the program will only be used to determine the efficacy of the program. They will not be associated with any one individual's responses or identity.)
HOW DO I SIGN-UP?
The deadline to sign up for the fall 2024 semester has now passed. Sign up for the spring 2025 semester will open up again in the new year.
