SCSS Washington DC Conference 2001

THIRTY-NINTH ANNUAL MEETING

To be held in Washington D.C. at the Radisson Hotel Old Town Alexandria, March 1-3, 2001

The 2001 meeting of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies, sponsored by George Mason University, will be held March 1-3, 2001 at the Radisson Hotel Old Town Alexandria, in Alexandria, Virginia. The Radisson Old Town Alexandria is located one block from the Potomac River and a few minutes walk from the main restaurant and shopping zone of Old Town. The Mt. Vernon-Arlington walking/jogging/biking trail runs past the hotel. The hotel offers shuttle bus service to and from nearby National Airport and to National Airport stop on the Metro (connecting to Washington DC and other parts of Northern Virginia).

The Radisson is a new, very nice hotel with excellent conference facilities. Rooms at the Radisson are at a special conference rate of $109 per night, single or double. For this rate to be guaranteed, reservations must be made by February 15. (Call 703-683-6000 or 1-800-333-3333).

In order to receive the special conference room rate, mention the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies. Please note that members are strongly urged to reserve early and to use the Radisson. Charges for hotel meeting rooms are based on a minimum number of bedrooms being taken by people registering as attending the SCSS conference. The room rate we are paying is excellent for the Washington area.

The Radisson makes an excellent base for exploring the many restaurants, shops and visitor attractions (Washington really did sleep here, among other things) of Alexandria, which are within easy distance. The hotel also provides shuttle bus service to the King Street area. Those wishing to stay longer in the Northern Virginia/Washington area can extend at the Radisson before or after the conference at the same rates. Many academic (the Library of Congress, Kennan Center) and other attractions (museums, memorials, restaurants, shops and others) of Washington and Northern Virginia are readily available by metro from the Radisson. Mount Vernon is only a few miles down the river. Civil war battlefields and other attractions are within easy driving distance.

Additional information will be forthcoming in the next issue of Beartracks, but plan now to attend the 2001 (the real first year of the millennium) meeting of the SCSS.
