WELCOME TO UHS!

University Health Services (UHS) is committed to providing comprehensive, high-quality healthcare to support the well-being of our students. Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals offers a range of services from routine check-ups and preventive care to evaluation and treatment of acute injuries and illnesses. UHS has an in-house dispensary stocked with a variety of medications, which minimizes the need to travel to local pharmacies to fill medications prescribed during appointments with us. Prescriptions for medications that are not stocked in our dispensary can be sent to local pharmacies.

Scope of Care

Our Scope
  • Acute and Urgent Care: We provide evaluation and treatment of common illnesses and injuries such as
respiratory infections, flu-like symptoms, minor wounds, sprains, and rashes.
  • Preventive Care: We provide routine physicals, wellness visits, immunizations (including flu and travel
vaccines), and screenings (e.g., STI, cholesterol, blood pressure).
  • Chronic Condition Management: We provide ongoing care and monitoring for manageable chronic
conditions such as asthma, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and mild to moderate diabetes or hypertension.
  • Women’s and Reproductive Health: We provide contraceptive counseling, Pap smears, STI testing and
treatment, IUD insertion, pregnancy testing, and menstrual health support.
  • Mental Health Collaboration: We provide coordinated care with CAPS for students with mental health
    needs.
  • Laboratory Services: We have an on-site laboratory for a limited range of tests and also contract with an
outside diagnostic laboratory for other tests.
  • Health Education and Outreach: We provide promotion of wellness and prevention through
educational programs, workshops, and individual coaching.
  • In-House Dispensary: A number of common prescription medications are kept on-site and can be
    prescribed by UHS providers.
Scope Limitations
  • Emergency Care: UHS is not an emergency room and does not provide trauma, life-threatening, or
emergency care outside of our regular business hours. Students in need of emergency care should go to
the Emergency Department at Highpoint Health - Sewanee with Ascension St. Thomas.
  • Specialty Services: While initial evaluation and referral are offered, UHS does not provide specialty care
(e.g., dermatology, orthopedics, neurology, etc.) on site. Referral coordination is available as needed.
  • Surgical Procedures: Only minor procedures (e.g., wound care, abscess drainage) are performed on-site.
Surgeries are referred to external providers.
  • Long-Term Psychiatry or Complex Mental Health Care: UHS can provide assessment and medication
management for mental health concerns, but students needing specialized or long-term psychiatric care
will be referred to community providers for continuity and safety.
  • Obstetrical and Pediatric Care: UHS does not provide obstetrical services (prenatal/delivery care) or
    pediatric care for dependents.
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents: UHS does not see students for any motor vehicle accident related injuries.
Students should proceed to the nearest emergency room or urgent care for any motor vehicle accident
    related injuries.
  • Work-Study Related Injuries: UHS does not see students for student employment related injuries. If a
student worker is injured, that individual is responsible for notifying their supervisor immediately, who
will then notify the Office of Human Resources as soon as possible. In an emergency, the injured or ill
student employee may visit any hospital or medical provider to obtain emergency or urgent medical care.
