Join the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Mario Alejandro Torres, for a special concert, Anniversaries: From Rome to Provence. This program commemorates 500 years since the birth of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and 150 years since the passing of Georges Bizet, tracing a musical journey from sacred Renaissance devotion to Romantic exuberance.
Highlights include Palestrina’s hymn The Strife Is O’er, Haydn’s witty “Surprise” Symphony (movements II & III), Tchaikovsky’s vibrant Fantasy on Capriccio Italien arranged by Bobrowitz for concert band, and Bizet’s L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2, culminating in the festive brilliance of the Farandole. Adding a unique visual dimension, guest artist Cheryl Lankhaar will create a live painting inspired by Alphonse Daudet’s drama L’Arlésienne (The Girl from Arles).
