Dr. Stephanie L. Batkie

Dr. Batkie, also a Teaching Professor in the Department of English and Creative Writing, is the Director of Writing Across the Curriculum and the Director of the Sewanee Writing Center since 2016. Prior to coming to Sewanee, she founded a directed instruction program for M.A. students at The University of Montevallo, where she also headed the Graduate Program in English.

We are delighted to introduce our tutors for the 2024-2025 academic year. Each of our tutors was selected by faculty for their writing and tutoring skills, and they represent some of the strongest students from across the College. Mohamed Abdelsalam (he/him)

Mohamed is a senior, and he has a special interest in Chemistry, English, and Creative Writing. He can also type really fast.  

Beatrix Adams (she/her)

Betsy Baker (she/her)

"Hi! I'm Betsy. I'm a sophomore humanities student here at Sewanee. I'm a member of the Interfaith House, an Americorps alumnus, co–president of the Sewanee Debate Union, Roberson Project summer intern, and occasional violinist in the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra. When I'm not writing for class, I'm writing fiction on the porch of Stirling’s!"

Suzanne Cole (she/her)

Brin Copp (she/her)

"Hey there! I'm Brin, a sophomore and Classics/English/Creative Writing student from Johnson City, TN. In my free time, I write stories, read books, draw pictures, and dabble in a variety of instruments (most recently the banjo). Things that excite me include a good sweet treat, a game of Bananagrams, a Star Wars rewatch, and hanging out in the Writing Center!"

Eleanor Dean (she/her)

"Outside of being a Writing Tutor, I'm also a Sacristan and a resident of the French House! When I'm not out and about on campus, I like to spend my time reading and working on the New York Times crossword."

Andy Essenburg (she/her)

Andrea is a senior and she has a special interest in English and Creative Writing. In her free time, she enjoys writing and fencing.

Mary Courtney Finn (she/her)

Major: Neuroscience

Minor: Chemistry

Mary Courtney is a junior with special interests in Neuroscience, Psychology, and Chemistry. Outside of the Writing Center, she can be found teaching spin classes at FitWell, working at one of the rural health clinics, or shanking golf balls at The Course at Sewanee.

Angela Gier (she/her)

Major: Environment and Sustainability 

"Hi there! My name is Angela Gier, and I'm a senior ESUS major with a concentration in Environmental Justice. I like reading and writing all different types of fun stuff, including everything from lab reports to creative writing assignments, and in my free time I like sitting in my hammock with a good book. You'll find me around campus either as a Lead Proctor, a member of OCCU, in the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra, or even working in the Speaking and Listening Center, where I'm also a tutor!"

Peyton is a junior and she has special interests in English, Psychology, and Philosophy. She is an avid reader and enjoys recreational running and watching video essays on obscure and unimportant topics.

"Hi y’all! My perfect day is a long run or a hard hike with beautiful views and then paddleboarding on a quiet lake in peace. I also play the bells in Breslin Tower, which I think is such a special Sewanee opportunity!"

I was trying to think about my favorite part of the writing process, but I can't decide between brainstorming and line editing— both can be quite the adrenaline rush (only sort of kidding about the adrenaline). "My favorite essays to write have to be literary analysis papers. However, I can totally help with other kinds as I feel confident in my knowledge about how to support a claim. In general, I wanted to become a tutor because I know what it feels like to get lost while writing an essay, and I want to ease that feeling for others."
