We are seeking individuals with an interest in data science and public good who will serve as part-time Project Mentors for the DataLab program this summer in Sewanee. Project Mentors are a critical component of DataLab's success. They will work closely with 1 or 2 project teams (3 or 4 students each, some from Sewanee, some external) to help solve real-world problems with social impact on topics that fit their backgrounds. The Project Mentors help the team think strategically through the client/partner's problem, the overall domain, the users, the provided data, and ultimately the practical solution to the project problem. They will also advise the team on client communication and give feedback on presentations and deliverables. Although the Project Mentors may provide data science and coding guidance, that is not expected since it will be the domain of the Technical Mentors.

DataLab runs for 8 weeks, from June 5 through July 28.

The Project Mentor's time commitments are:
  • Attend a DataLab orientation session in late May.
  • Attend an initial meeting in early June with the community partner.
  • For each team that you mentor, attend at least 3 workshop sessions/team meetings per week to provide advice and encouragement to the team.
  • Attend the final presentation for Sewanee DataLab 2022 on the set date in July.

For this support, we will be able to offer you a stipend of $1,000 per project. We'd love to have you as a part of DataLab this summer -- come solve real, local problems with us! For more information or if you have any questions, please reach out to us
