Dr. Andrea Mansker (second from left) with her fellow 2025 faculty award winners.

Past Chair of the WGS Program Andrea Mansker, who also serves as the David E. Underdown Professor of Modern European History, has won the 2025 University Award in Scholarship, Research, or Creative Activity! She was recognized at a ceremony in McGriff Alumni House on March 31, 2025, alongside colleagues winning awards in teaching (Prof. Bill Engel in English and Prof. Shuler Hopkins in Mathematics and Computer Science), service to the institution (Prof. Julian Ledford in French and French Studies), and academic advising and mentoring (Prof. Evan Joslin in Chemistry).

Prof. Deon Miles, Interim Associate Dean of the College for Inclusion and Faculty Development, announced Mansker as the recipient of this award and highlighted her scholarly excellence by reading parts from her nominating materials. One nominator had this to say:

“Andrea Mansker has embodied an unfailing commitment to balancing excellent teaching, superb scholarship, and dedicated service to WGS, History, and the institution at large. With the recent publication of her latest book, Matchmaking and the Marriage Market in Postrevolutionary France (Cornell UP, 2024), Andrea has once again demonstrated precisely why she is the David E. Underdown Professor of Modern European History at Sewanee. Her book is a triumph and the product of many years of careful research and writing‒all undertaken amid an enormous amount of administrative work she assumed while chairing WGS and advising the Bairnwick Women's Center between 2014 and 2022 (a time that included the first years of the COVID pandemic). Within this period and in addition to her latest book, Andrea has published no fewer than seven authored or co-authored articles and chapters in respected venues, such as the Journal of Women’s History, French Historical Studies, and Histoire, Économie & Société. Taken together, this impressive array of publications displays Andrea’s deep and abiding commitment to studying women’s history in a truly interdisciplinary and intersectional fashion. In short, Andrea’s commitment to and record of scholarly excellence deserves notice. The time is right to honor her with this year’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship, Research, and/or Creative Activity.”
