Dr. Christopher Saint Jean is a faculty member in the Department of Politics at Sewanee: The University of the South. His research examines the mechanisms through which ideological and structural hegemony is maintained within Black politics. Specifically, his work examines how institutions, elite messaging, and cultural ideologies shape intra-group dynamics, political constraints, and the boundaries of counter-hegemonic resistance.
Dr. Saint Jean earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from Rutgers University–New Brunswick, and completed his undergraduate degree at CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Before joining Sewanee, he conducted policy analysis as a state graduate intern with the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education.
In the classroom, Dr. Saint Jean emphasizes a discussion-based, student-centered approach to learning. He encourages students to critically evaluate core political science theories by connecting them to contemporary social dynamics, state policy, and institutional frameworks.
