The program consists of a three-week language course at the Deutsch in Deutschland (DiD) institute in Berlin and daily excursions in the city led by the accompanying Sewanee faculty member. Based on their proficiency level, students take language courses at DiD alongside other international students. The weekday excursions explore the history and cultural spaces of Berlin. Students are also able to dive into Berlin’s rich array of museums, concert halls, and theaters. On the weekend, students have the opportunity to explore Berlin independently, to travel to nearby cities, or to go on an optional excursion. In recent years, we have toured Sans Souci, walked through the gardens in Potsdam, and floated the canals of the Spreewald.

Students should plan to arrive in Berlin on Saturday, May 20 and to depart on Saturday, June 10. Travel to and from Berlin is independent from the program. Upon arrival, students will be met at the airport and transferred to their host’s home.

Please direct any inquiries to Dr. Richard Apgar at rbapgar@sewanee.edu.

This program is open to applicants not enrolled in a degree program at Sewanee.

Cross Scholarship
Established in 1997, the Jackson Cross (C’30) scholarship offers assistance for Sewanee students studying abroad in Germany. These funds are awarded on the basis of financial need and to assist with additional costs incurred as part of study abroad, particularly in the summer, including international travel and personal expenses. There are two deadlines each year: for programs in the summer and fall terms, the application deadline is in early April; for programs in the spring semester, the deadline is in early October. Students studying in Germany or Austria are encouraged to apply here.
