Navigate your transition to college and chart your course for the future.

"Embark helped me to identify what my goals are in college and how I plan to execute them ... It helped me to identify the things that I value within the community and the opportunities that I wish to explore in the future."

What is Embark?

Embark is a once a week class that connects you with resources and tools to succeed in your first semester in college and beyond. While your Explore track lets you explore the campus and community and your Encounter class gives you a jump start on encountering the liberal arts approach to important issues and topics, Embark is designed to guide you as you Embark on your journey as a Sewanee student.

The course is taught by staff from all across campus—some of the very same individuals who will be guiding you and assisting you as you navigate Sewanee throughout your four years. The instructors are assisted by a peer mentor, an upperclass student who has been exactly where you are and is eager to share their wisdom and experience with you.

What are the goals of Embark?

In your Embark course, you’ll cultivate habits of mind that allow you to make the most of your Sewanee experience. You’ll learn and practice frameworks intended to help you:

  • navigate your Sewanee experience
  • gain a sense of belonging
  • understand resources to support your success

Your FYE Embark experience is designed to help you in these areas:

  • Academic success
  • Discovery of self and community
  • Reflection and critical understanding
  • Navigation

"Embark taught me a number of things about myself, the college experience, my community, and how I can optimize numerous aspects of my life ... Embark gave me the skills and resources, now it’s my turn to apply actionable steps to my daily life on the Domain."
