Katherine C. Theyson is an associate professor of economics, with a focus on the fields of international trade and development. The courses Theyson teaches include introduction to economics, international trade, and international finance.
Theyson earned her Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where her dissertation investigated the factors affecting the off-farm work choices of agricultural households in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon and how those choices impacted land use and deforestation on family farms. She has previously taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was honored in 2002-2003 with the Tanner Teaching Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Theyson has research interests in a variety of areas including the nature and impact of international trade, the relationship between inequality and economic development, the economics of sustainable development, and the role of health in the process of economic development. She is currently pursuing additional research on the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon with topics including investigations into the roles of women in agricultural households and an investigation into agricultural household separability. Prior to pursuing her graduate education in economics, Theyson received her B.A. in chemistry from North Carolina State University and was employed as an organic and medicinal chemist.
