Study away is an important part of our curriculum, and we encourage all of our students to complement their experiences on the Domain (our forest) with environmental study in other regions of the US or the world.
Many of our students take advantage of programs that are taught and managed by our faculty, and these opportunities are listed below.
Haiti Institute in Sewanee
Summer research internships, a spring break trip and other opportunities with Deborah McGrath, Pradip Malde and Dixon Myers. Check out the Haiti Institute in Sewanee!
Western Geology and Comparative Watersheds
Spend three weeks in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado with Dr. Bran Potter. Or, two weeks in Germany looking at watersheds in Germany's Kraichgau region near Heidelberg with Dr. Martin Knoll. Details are here.

Sewanee in Iceland
This class, Sustainability and Global Environmental Change, gives students a chance to explore inhospitable extremes and in doing so, to learn more about the earth and how people relate to it. We focus on two complementary facets of the relationship between human societies and the natural environment: natural resources and natural hazards. Both are central to life in Iceland. Additional information about the class can be found at the Iceland web page.
Sewanee in New Zealand
Sustainability and Global Environmental Change is a two part class that begins on campus during the Advent 2017 semester and continues with a two-week field trip to New Zealand during winter break. The class focuses on topics of biodiversity, natural resources, and natural hazards, using New Zealand as a case study. We are accepting applications for the 2017-18 class until April 3rd. Learn more and apply here: http://www.sewanee.edu/newzealand/
Field Study In Belize
The course allows students to explore the ecology of rainforests and coral reefs at remote field stations in Belize. More information and photographs.
