Building on Sewanee's great literary tradition, the University offers a major in creative writing with a concentration in poetry. Poetry classes center craft in their discussion of poems from ancient to contemporary, which includes students’ own poems. How do the images, metaphors, rhymes, and other elements of a poem produce an effect on the reader and speak to larger questions in the world, throughout time?

Poetry Course of Study

The Creative Writing major at Sewanee allows emerging poets to begin to understand the long history of poetic tradition in global societies across time—from Homer to Li Bai; from Federico García Lorca to Terrance Hayes; from Anna Akhmatova to Natalie Diaz; and, to situate and define themselves within this tradition.
