Before we write about the world, we must understand our place within it. The liberal arts education at Sewanee gives you the skills you need to interrogate, investigate, and contemplate the questions and issues we address as writers.
Plays are meant to be seen. That's why our playwrights have access to the Studio Theatre at the Tennessee Williams Center for readings and productions of student-written work.
Your time at Sewanee culminates in a public reading of your full-length thesis play.
At Sewanee, you will have an opportunity to engage with a wide range of industry professionals while honing your craft. Past guest artists have included artistic directors, literary managers, Broadway actors, screenwriters, playwrights, TV writers, and video game designers.
Our playwriting students have participated in the Kennedy Center Playwriting Intensive, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's Young Southern Writers Project, and the Horizon Theatre's New South Young Playwrights Festival in Atlanta.
Creative writing majors Jacob Franklin and Katharine McLellen participated in the Southern Writers' Festival at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Katharine was selected for the Young Southern Writers' Project where her 10 minute play won the overall Critic's Pick Award. Jacob served as a production intern, shadowing two professional playwrights throughout the week.
Congratulations to freshman Rebecca Liles, whose 10-minute play "Bear Hands" was one of six plays selected for the Barter Theatre's College Playwrights Festival. Liles will travel to the Barter Theatre where she will attend rehearsals, participate in a playwriting master class, and watch a performance of her play.
