Brian McCray is an anthropological archaeologist whose research focuses on social dynamics at ecological interfaces. He is especially interested in recreating past landscapes using spatial modeling to integrate environmental data with human-scale analysis. He earned his BA from the University of Virginia and MA and PhD from Vanderbilt University. Brian’s research examines the way communal gatherings articulated Andean and Amazonian interaction between 1000-1500 CE. A recent digital archaeology project incorporated machine learning to make extant archaeological reports accessible and reusable with the Digital Archaeological Record. He has conducted fieldwork and taught archaeological field methods in the US, Caribbean, Andean South America, and the Levant. As university archaeologist, Brian helps evaluate the impact of land-use and development on the archaeological sites on the Sewanee Domain, providing the opportunity for students to learn field and lab methods in a practical setting.
