The Advent semester awarding of gowns will take place in an outdoor ceremony that will be livestreamed for families.

The induction of new members into the Order of the Gown is normally part of a celebration of Foundation Day and the kickoff for Family Weekend. In 2020, the awarding of gowns will take place in a standalone outdoor ceremony that will be livestreamed for families.

The gowning ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. CDT Friday, Sept. 4, on the Quad. It will include remarks by Provost Nancy Berner before Mandy Tu, C’21, president of the Order of the Gown, announces the names of the approximately 300 new members. Those new members will be recognized before being admitted to the Order by Vice-Chancellor Reuben Brigety.

The Order of the Gown is an academic honor society and a unique student government body among U.S. colleges and universities. Since 1875 the Order of the Gown has remained the body responsible for maintaining the spirit, traditions, and ideals of the University of the South. The wearing of the gown is both a sign of academic achievement and a promise to continue the ideals and traditions of the University.
