Program Overview

Academics

The following course is required for all Sewanee students on the Postwar Europe program.

A study of the intersection of identity-based conflict and cultural memory in the contemporary moment. We will investigate the construction of (national, political, ethnic, etc.) identities and violence through the lens of cultural memory. Following a brief introduction to memory studies, the interdisciplinary field that explores the interplay of past and present in sociocultural contexts, we will take a comparative approach to topics such as: the origins of conflict, the intersection of social justice and commemoration, memorials and counter-memorials, and examples of memory conflict. Throughout the course we will be examining and visiting memory sites in Berlin that serve as examples of local and global collective memory. Course Attribute: G7
