Sewanee library bikes
The program was established to address equity issues in accessing, maintaining, and storing a bicycle on campus.
It was also established to provide a low-cost, high-satisfaction alternative to driving on campus, which impacts both community wellness and University greenhouse gas emissions. In its simplest form the bike lending program checks out a bike to a student or employee, using library software, for a semester. That student or employee is then responsible for the care, safety and maintenance of the bike while it is in their possession.
Critically, the program represents a shift in culture from one focused on vehicles to a focus on active transport. With the introduction of bicycles to a wider campus populace, there arises a need for scaffolding designed to meet people's skill-levels and help make safer cyclists of them.
