Faculty Research Grants
Dean Terry L. Papillon and the University Research Grants Committee would like to inform the faculty of the opportunities available for funding of their proposed research and faculty development projects. We also wish to outline the procedures to be followed in applying for such financial support. This message serves as well to announce the first deadline for faculty research and development applications.
The Faculty Research Grants Funds can be used to support faculty research projects. To make the best use of these funds, they are jointly administered by the Office of the Dean of the College and the University Research Grants Committee. Faculty members seeking funding for a project must fill out the electronic form by the deadline set by the committee. This form must be filled out accurately and completely or the proposal will be denied.
You will need to attach to the form:
- A detailed itemized and justified budget is necessary (please use the downloadable Research Grants Budget Justification Template for 2021-2022). If you are applying for work to be done during the summer, and your budget is going to be split between two fiscal years, please indicate in your budget how you would like the money divided by telling us how much you would like from each budget. For example: if your expenditures start in June and continue into July, your budget spans two fiscal years.
- A 1-3 page description of your proposal, detailing how the particular trip (or expense) will support your research and/or your development as a faculty member. You must specify particular outcomes (an article, a book chapter, etc.), which should also be addressed later in the project report you will have to submit in order to be reimbursed for funded expenditures. Aim for a straight-forward and clearly articulated description suitable for an intelligent reader who is likely outside your field. Complex literary analyses, math equations, and chemical formulas are far less helpful than a precise and jargon-free description that is no longer than three pages.
- A short recent CV (no more than four pages please).
- A copy of the report about your most recently supported project if you have been funded by Faculty Research Grants in the last ten years (please use the Research Grant Final Report Template).
All these documents together with the electronic form will be sent automatically to all members of the committee and to the Office of the Dean of the College. Tenured and tenure-track faculty members, as well as research professors, will have priority over the funds, but the committee will review all applications.
Applications for financial support will be due by the following dates:
For work to be carried out during the remainder of the 2021-2022 academic year (i.e. prior to Commencement 2022), applications must be received by Friday, October 1, 2019 by 11:59 p.m. For work to be carried out in the summer of 2022 or during the 2022-2023 academic year, applications must be received by Friday, February 4, 2022 by 11:59 p.m. A reminder of this second deadline will be sent at the start of the Easter semester.
Please note that funding for faculty travel to professional conferences is available from Dean Papillon for college faculty or Dean Turrell for School of Theology faculty.
