The Office of the Dean of the College is dedicated to creating an environment in which students and faculty can flourish to the best of their ability.

Values

We aspire to be the best undergraduate college possible through current and engaging pedagogy, a diverse faculty at the forefront of their fields, an ever-improving and more diverse student body, and a physical and social environment that allows all members to be their best selves. Embracing our responsibilities to an ever more environmentally conscious and internationally engaged world, we seek to graduate informed, discerning, and committed citizens who make positive and lasting contributions in the world.

As reflective of our values, when making a decision the Office of the Dean of the College considers these questions:

  • Will it serve students?
  • Does it promote community and inclusion?
  • Does it engage the faculty and staff?
  • Is it financially and environmentally sustainable?
  • Does it promote the role of the college as a change agent in the world?

Important announcement for the class of 2024 and beyond: Sewanee is shifting from naming a valedictorian and salutatorian to having a Senior Speaker; see the communication from Dean Papillon to the student body (sent March 22, 2023). Note also that the Dean will now be naming "Dean's Scholars" (the first were named in May 2023!).
