OCE's Sewanee Votes Receives Award from All In Campus Democracy Challenge
The University of the South Recognized For Excellence in Student Voter Registration and Turnout During the 2022 Midterm Elections.
The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) recognized The University of the South for its nonpartisan democratic engagement efforts that fostered high levels of student voter engagement in the 2022 midterm elections.
The University of the South received the highest voter registration for a 4-year institution in 2022 in the Tennessee campus voting challenge, reflecting its commitment to ensuring that nonpartisan democratic engagement is a defining feature of campus life. ALL IN Awards Day in late September 2024 honored The University of the South for excellence in nonpartisan student voter engagement and campus turnout in the 2022 Midterm Elections.
The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge empowers colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement. The University of the South was recognized alongside more than 500 campuses using data from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) out of Tufts University, which found that colleges and universities had the second-highest voter turnout among students in a midterm election since NSLVE began measuring this data. The full list of campus award winners can be viewed here.
State and City Campus Voting Challenges are nonpartisan recognition programs for higher education institutions in a particular state or city with a commitment to increasing student voter participation and engagement on campuses across the state or city. Departments of State, Secretaries of State, and nonprofit partners co-facilitate the voting challenges in collaboration with the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
Awards given through state challenges are based on campuses’ National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) reports generated by the Institute for Democracy & Higher Education at Tufts University in Mass. According to our institution’s 2022 NSLVE data, our student voter registration rate was 79.6%, the highest among participating 4-year institutions in the state of Tennessee’s Voting Campus Challenge.
“The ALL IN Awards were created to celebrate nonpartisan democratic engagement and the outstanding campus voter registration and turnout rates achieved by our ALL IN campuses. Ahead of the 2024 elections, ALL IN campuses are ready to build on the momentum from 2022 to ensure their communities are ready to make an even bigger impact this fall,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. “ALL IN is proud to celebrate and honor top-performing campuses, like The University of the South, who demonstrate that nonpartisan student voter engagement is possible and effective.”
More than 1,060 institutions enrolling more than 10 million students participate in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, which supports colleges and universities in achieving excellence in nonpartisan student voter engagement.
